Troubleshooting: Microphone and Camera Issues

Last updated: April 22, 2026

A guide to fixing your microphone and camera for the purpose of simulations.

Second Nature Simulations require a working microphone and camera connection. If your microphone or camera are not working, follow the steps below.

NOTE:

The guide below will reference your browser and operating system (OS). A browser is software used to access the internet, such as Chrome, Firefox or Edge. OS is the software that supports a device's basic functions, such as macOS, Windows or Linux.

Step-by-Step Guide to Troubleshooting Your Microphone and Camera

1. Verify Hardware Functionality

Check if your device's microphone and camera work in other applications such as Zoom or Slack. This will help determine the scope of your issue.

2. Hardware Troubleshooting

If your microphone or camera do not work on any application:

  • Ensure your device is connected to a microphone and camera.

  • Install or upgrade drivers for your microphone and camera.

3. Browser-Specific Troubleshooting

If your microphone and camera work in other applications but not in Second Nature:

  • Check Browser Permissions: Ensure you have granted permission for Second Nature to access your microphone and camera.

    • Chrome: Click the lock icon to the left of the URL. Ensure the microphone and camera permissions are set to "Allow".

    • Firefox: Click the microphone or camera icon to the left of the URL. Ensure you select "Remember this decision".

  • Alternatively, you can adjust these permissions in the browser settings:

    • Chrome: Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Site Settings > Microphone/Camera. Allow `app.secondnature.ai` to access your microphone and camera.

    • Firefox: Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Permissions. Click the Settings option for the camera or microphone and set the status of ‘app.secondnature.ai’ to “Allow”.

  • Hard Refresh Browser: After adjusting permissions, hard refresh the browser by pressing Ctrl or Command + R.

4. Operating System Permissions

If the microphone and camera do not work on any website on any browser, they may be blocked by your operating system:

  • Windows: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera/Microphone. Ensure your browser has access to the microphone and camera under app permissions. Toggle “Let desktop apps access your camera” on.

  • macOS: Go to System Preferences > Privacy & Security > Camera/Microphone. Check your browser app to give it permissions.

5. Additional Checks

Ensure your microphone and camera are not in use by another website or program. Close other websites and apps that have access to your microphone and camera.

For example, you may need to end a Microsoft Teams meeting prior to a simulation.

Ensure your camera and sound are not muted.

  • Windows: Go to Settings > Sound. If the input volume is at 0 or the microphone is muted, increase the volume or unmute the microphone.

  • macOS: Go to System Preferences > Sound. Ensure the input volume is set appropriately and the microphone is not muted.

6. Specific Issues with SCORM Content

If the problem is specific to SCORM content (and not the Simulation Models): Contact IT and ask them to set the SCORM Course to "open in a new tab," rather than in the same tab.

7. Contact IT

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, contact your IT department for further assistance.
